Childcare solutions used & satisfaction

If you needed childcare in the past 10 years, what childcare solutions (e.g., childcare center/nursery, nanny, family support, adjusted work schedule, etc.) did your family end up using? Are you satisfied with the availability of childcare options in your country of employment, why or why not?

I have a 1.5 year old, and the childcare during the first year of his life has been, in chronological order, my wife's parental leave, then my parental leave, then a rotating combination of my mom and my wife's mother -- we are very lucky to have had that kind of support. My son will start preschool/daycare in the upcoming fall. There are several childcare options near me, but many have age restrictions (i.e., must be 2+ years), and all are quite expensive.

Yes

Biggest challenges & their impact

Looking back, what were the biggest childcare challenges (e.g., long waiting times, affordability, quality, location, etc.) your family faced? How did these challenges impact your work and family life?

Finding the right mix of quality, availability, and affordability has been a leading challenge. Moreover, because of the competitive market, the first dimension on which we have compromised is affordability.

One thing to change

If you could change one thing about today's childcare system, what would it be? (For example: access, affordability, quality, employer or university support, emergency backup care, or anything else.)

Affordability would be the leading choice here.
